Like many viewers, I’m a big fan of hit Apple TV+ gaming office comedy Mythic Quest (especially the first couple of seasons). But the trailer for limited-series spinoff Side Quest, below, doesn’t exactly look like the stuff of myth. It doesn’t exactly fill me with breathless anticipation. But now the show is out, so you can judge for yourself.
The entire four-episode anthology series debuts on March 26, alongside Mythic Quest‘s season four finale. Hard to tell from a trailer, but it might amount to bonus points for super-fans of the main show who are sad to see it go at the end of a season.
Update: As of Wednesday, Side Quest now streams on Apple TV+. Reviews so far sound positive, though not ecstatic. The Hollywood Reporter called the limited anthology series “a pleasant but aimless ramble through the Mythic Quest universe,” for example.
Side Quest trailer makes limited series look like bonus points for Mythic Quest superfans
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love it if Side Quest proves worthy of a few days of hilarity in the wake of Mythic Quest season four. And maybe it will turn out that way. I sometimes wondered about the fictional game’s legion of fans while watching Mythic Quest, set in and around the gaming company’s office, where we sometimes see the game itself but rarely the people playing it.
Yet from the trailer, Side Quest has the feeling of filler. It remains to be seen if bringing the MMORPG‘s players out in the wider world into even a limited spinoff will seem worthwhile.

“An expansion of the Mythic Quest universe, Side Quest explores the lives of employees, player and fans who are impacted by the game in an anthology format,” Apple TV+ said.
Anthology format means each episode stands alone, with different leading characters and plots. But the trailer feels random, with no story to hang its hat on. It looks like familiar characters will pop up here and there at gaming conventions and the like, or maybe unlikely customer-support scenarios.
The spinoff certainly brings pedigree, as it comes from the same team as the original show, and stars some of the same actors. As the streamer noted, the new series stars Rob McElhenney, Anna Konkle, Derek Waters, William Stanford Davis, Bria Samoné Henderson, Rome Flynn, Leonard Robinson, Gary Kraus, Annamarie Kasper, Esai Morales, Shalita Grant “and many more in the leading roles across each installment.” So some familiar faces and lots of unfamiliar faces will appear.
